Conceived and directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall
The Island Chalk Circle is a contemporary adaptation of The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, set on an unnamed island resembling Singapore in 2045, ten years after a sudden Total Power Collapse plunged the nation into darkness. In emergency camps, displaced communities debate who has the right to land. A Singer revives an old story—The Chalk Circle—to help them decide.
The story returns to the day the lights went out. As the city descends into chaos and the powerful secure their escape, Gracia, a kitchen worker, is abandoned with an elderly woman from the ruling elite, classified as “low utility”. Choosing care over self-preservation, Gracia flees north to protect her survival.
Parallel trials reveal the collapse was no accident but sabotage from within the system itself. As the story ends, the camp must decide: when everything falls apart, who truly deserves protection—and who must be left behind?
